Orthotics are shoe inserts and represent a less invasive, more effective and cheaper way to treat many foot and lower limb problems. They change the biomechanics of the foot to re-align, offer support and reduce strain and stress on various structures.
Orthotics can be used to manage and treat the following
- Plantar Fasciitis
- Heel spurs
- Foot, knee, hip or back pain
- Achilles Tendonitis
- Fallen arches or excessive pronation
- Sever’s disease
- Metatarsalgia (ball of foot pain)
- Morton’s Neuralgia
In Australia there are two types of orthotics: custom-made prescription orthotics and pre-made or “off-the-shelf” orthotics.
Orthotics can be prescribed by a physiotherapist to relieve pain in the foot or lower extremity (knee, hip, back).
They are helpful for people with foot problems, arthritis, or chronic injuries.
They are often used by those that stand or work on their feet for prolonged periods, as well as athletes.
In recreational or professional athletes, slight imbalances can create pain with the forces and repetition associated with sport.
An assessment of the lower limb including gait analysis is performed by the physiotherapist to ensure proper prescription of orthoses.
