Manual Therapy is any “hands-on” treatment that is performed by your physiotherapist. There are many different types of treatment available to use by your physiotherapist, and they will choose them according to your unique needs.

Types of Manual Therapy

For joint stiffness, treatments may include passively moving joints in specific directions and at different speeds and with different forces, to regain movement (joint mobilization and manipulation). There are also techniques that mobilise joints with movement (ie Mulligans techniques)

To increase muscle length, treatments may include muscle stretching and passive movements of the affected body part. Another technique involves having the patient move the body part against the therapist’s resistance to improve muscle activation and timing (PNF patterns and muscle energy techniques)

Selected specific soft tissue techniques may also be used to improve the mobility and function of tissue and muscles. This includes myofascial releases, a massage technique to mobilise the fascia (thin, tough connective tissue that wraps most structures within the human body, including muscle), deep tissue massage and trigger point releases. A trigger point can be defined as a hyperirritable point within a taut band of muscle -a tender “knot” in the muscle tissue. A trigger point release usually involves the application of sustained force over the “knot” until the pain and tension in the muscle subsides.
